Can I go on holiday to Portugal?

Portugal was removed from the green list last month, after being added just weeks earlier.

It is now on the amber list – this means Brits will need the following when returning to the UK:

  • A negative test taken pre-arrival
  • A mandatory ten-day quarantine at home
  • Two Covid tests, taken on day two and day eight

However, double vaxxed Brits can skip the quarantine but will still need to have negative Covid tests pre-arrival and on day two, with the new rules in place from July 19.

The Portuguese island of Madeira is not on the amber list – it was added to the UK's green list last week, meaning Brits can visit without having to quarantine when returning home.

What are the travel restrictions for Portugal?

Portugal welcomed Brits back last month without having to quarantine, only requiring a negative Covid test to enter.

However, they have since changes the rules, with only fully vaccinated Brits now allowed to enter.

This means Brits with no jabs or just one jab must quarantine for 14 days on arrival.

According to the UK Foreign Office, the new rules only apply to mainland Portugal.

Stricter COVID-19 rules are being be imposed across the Lisbon region and Algarve tourism hotspot Albufeira as Portuguese authorities try to control a rise in infections that threatens the country's summer holiday season.

Restaurants, cafes and non-food shops in Lisbon and Albufeira must close at 3:30pm during weekends.
