An Inspector Calls… A review of The East London Hotel

An Inspector Calls… The East London Hotel is a hip place that is sure to please the 20-something crowd

  • The East London Hotel is located in trendy Bethnal Green, rooms start at £85
  • The Inspector said his room was small but clean and ‘cleverly designed’
  • There’s a lively bar on the ground floor, where breakfast is served

London’s Bethnal Green is lively on a Saturday night. Bars under the old railway fizz, with signs saying ‘open until 5am’.

Launching a hotel in this increasingly trendy part of town seems like a smart move — and so it may prove for the East London Hotel, where rooms start at £85, although these are in the basement with the tiniest of skylights.

We are on the third floor, hermetically sealed but with views down the busy main street. The room is small, but cleverly designed and spotlessly clean.

Of the moment: The East London Hotel is conveniently located in a trendy part of town

The 43in TV sits inside a wooden frame so you hardly notice it; there is space for a case under the bed and thought has gone into the lighting. The bathroom has a mirror that doesn’t steam up.

This is accommodation of the moment. Which means a brown piece of A4 paper by way of a directory, explaining that the way to contact the staff is via WhatsApp.

No restaurant as such, but there’s a lively bar on the ground floor, where breakfast is served. We head to nearby Brick Lane for a curry. In the lift down, we get talking to a group of 20somethings who are off to watch a friend’s gig.

As it happens, we see them again about 8am while having coffee and about to order our smashed avocado on sourdough. They’ve had a long night and look bedgraggled, but this is just the place for anyone keeping unconventional hours. It’s an unconventional sort of hotel.
