TikTok’s ‘Cha-Cha Slide’ challenge could be the most dangerous yet

Another day, another harebrained social media challenge video racking up millions of views.

Thought the “skull-breaker challenge” was dangerous? A ridiculous new TikTok trend encourages drivers to swerve all over the road like absolute maniacs in time with music.

Dubbed the ” ‘Cha-Cha Slide’ challenge,” the prank involves primarily teens driving recklessly to the beat of the stunt’s namesake dance anthem, first released 20 years ago by DJ Casper a k a Mr. C The Slide Man.

Each time Casper belts out a lyric — such as “slide to the left!” — the driver makes a corresponding steering-wheel swerve, often into the oncoming traffic lane.

Things get really hairy during the “crisscross” verse, which prompts the motorists to swerve crazily in both directions without regard for other drivers.

Despite the obvious risks, the trend has taken TikTok by storm, reportedly causing several near-accidents by participants. “The car almost flipped,” reads the caption to a video of TikTokker Angel De La Cruz performing the stunt with friends.

TikTok warns viewers on several clips that “The action in this video could result in serious injury,” however, the platform hasn’t taken down any of the videos.

However, many TikTokkers have recognized the half-baked trend’s potential hazards. “Why y’all drivin like you got extra lives,” wondered one commenter on the most viral “Cha-Cha Slide” challenge video, which has 2.8 million views as of Thursday morning.

“Dis why you guys pay higher car insurance,” added another.

Fortunately, the “Cha-Cha Slide” challenge hasn’t claimed any lives yet. But viral attention grabs have claimed at least one life: Australia Snapchatter Shania McNeill, 21, died in a head-on collision last year after “playing chicken” with other drivers, reports 7News.

The “Cha-Cha Slide” challenge isn’t the only dangerous stunt currently circulating the internet. The viral TikTok “penny challenge” has been slammed by firefighters as a fire hazard while the “skull-breaker” challenge has been deemed deadly by doctors.
