If you’re buying presents and fabulous food, it’s easy to see where the money is going, but when it comes to hidden costs, such as the extra energy we use over the festive season, anyone can be caught out.
Even preparing your Christmas feast and feeding the crowds over the festive season may be more expensive than you think – especially if you like to experiment with new recipes from your favourite TV chefs.
The good news is that it’s not difficult to keep your energy use down if you follow a few simple steps. One of the most effective things you can do is to get smart meters fitted.
They come with a portable display that shows how much energy you’re using, and exactly what you’re spending, so you can be a bit more careful if you need to.
Did you know, for example, that using the oven for four hours costs about 58p? So you’ll want to fill it up with all the extras while the turkey is on. (Don’t forget the pigs in blankets!) Cooked separately, an hour in the oven for roast potatoes costs roughly 14p, while 40 minutes for parsnips is around 10p.
We’re talking about pennies but over the Christmas period it all adds up. With guests to entertain, dinners to prepare for Christmas Eve and Boxing Day, and all the snacks and hot drinks, you could be surprised at the final bill.
And that’s before allowing for extra baths and showers, or for having the lights, heating and TV on for longer than usual.
A big advantage of smart meters is that you know how much you’ve spent before your bill arrives. So the only seasonal surprises awaiting you will be the nice ones under the Christmas tree.
