Sean Connery, the actor best known for his portrayal of James Bond, has died, aged 90, his family said.

The film star, who was aged 30 when he was cast as the original actor to portray James Bond, appeared in seven 007 films.

Born in Scotland, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2000.

Tributes flowed on Twitter for the film star. Actor Sam Neill wrote "Every day on set with Sean Connery was an object leson in how to act on screen."

A fan tweeted: "Really sad about this. The man who defined James Bond – what a legacy that is. Still my favourite Bond."

Connery had retired to the Bahamas where he lived with his second wife. He turned 90 in August.
