Queen Elizabeth sadly had to say goodbye to her last corgi, Whisper, who reportedly died a week ago.
The Queen had adopted “friendly chap” Whisper, 12, after Bill Fenwick, their owner and the Queen’s former gamekeeper, passed away in 2016. Whisper’s health was reportedly worsening, but it’s unclear what exactly Whisper passed away from.
According to the Daily Mail, the Queen and Whisper were incredibly close. “Over the last two years she had become especially close to Whisper who devotedly followed her from room to room throughout Buckingham Palace,” the outlet reported.
Earlier this year, the Queen experienced another loss when her other corgi Willow was put to sleep after battling cancer.
There is somewhat of a bright side to this really freaking awful news: The Queen reportedly stopped breeding her corgis in 2015 because she didn’t want any of them “left behind” after she passes away, which, I guess everyone’s sticking to that plan? She also still has her two corgi-wiener dog mixes named Candy and Vulcan.
To attempt to dry your tears, here are some lovely photos of the Queen and her perfect dogs:
