Prince Harry & Meghan Markle Sign Multi-Year Deal With Netflix

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have just signed a multi-year deal with Netflix to produce documentaries, feature films, scripted television shows and children’s series. The couple, who recently purchased a home in Santa Barbara, has reportedly been negotiating with the streaming giant for quite some time.

In a statement, Meghan and Harry said that they want to shine “a light on people and causes around the world” by creating content that educates and inspires hope. The couple joins a long list of talent recruited by Netflix in recent years, including the Obamas, Grey’s Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes and Glee creator Ryan Murphy.

Markle, who previously starred as Rachel Zane in the drama Suits from 2011 to 2017, has recently narrated the Disney Plus documentary Elephants, a film that benefitted Elephants Without Borders, a non-profit organization that protects wildlife in Botswana.

After her engagement to Prince Harry, Markle retired from acting and closed her social media accounts. In 2018, she became the Duchess of Sussex upon her marriage to Harry. The couple has a son, Archie Mountbatten-Windsor, born on May 6, 2019. Last year, the couple announced their intention to step back as senior members of the royal family and move to North America. Markle’s final solo engagement as a senior royal was a visit to Robert Clack School in Dagenham in East London ahead of International Women’s Day.

Although it is unclear what type of content the couple might produce for Netflix, they have been closely associated with several organizations, including the mental health initiative Heads Together, Sentebale: The Princes’ Fund for Lesotho, a charity to aid children orphaned by HIV/AIDS, and the Invictus Games, an international adaptive multi-sport event that aids wounded, injured or sick armed services personnel and veterans.

Markle has also shown her support recently for the Black Lives Matter movement. It has been rumored that the family might move back to the UK temporarily to attend several events, including the unveiling of the Princess Diana statue at Kensington Palace and Trooping the Colour next summer.
