The owner of a dog that attacked five people – including a 15-year-old girl – said the animal was ‘just protecting his family.’
Horrified witnesses reported seeing a "bloodbath" and hearing screams as the dog mauled passers-by ‘at random.’
The dog was reportedly seen pinning down one person in the terrifying attack outside a luxury home in Formby, Merseyside.
Owner Theodoro Tirimou said his Caucasian Shepherd, named Simba, ran out into the street after the wind blew the latch off his garden gate.
Simba was "humanely destroyed" on Friday after launching the attack at around 1pm on Thursday.
Mr Tirimou told the Liverpool Echo : "He was just walking around the street at first, he wasn’t attacking anyone until the lady walked down.
"He is a guard dog, it was just his instinct to protect his family."
Merseyside Police said five people suffered "minor injuries" in the incident.
Police officers remained at the home, which is surrounded by a towering perimeter wall and electronic gates, for several hours following the incident.
A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "At around 1pm, a report was received that a dog had bitten five people in Liverpool Road.
"Emergency services attended and five people, a 15-year-old girl and four adults are currently being treated for what are thought to be minor injuries."
In a further statement, the force said: "The dog was humanely destroyed.
"We can confirm that we were not previously aware of the dog involved in yesterday’s incident and had no past dealings with it.
"No arrests have been made."
Police also said they had not been made aware of the dog prior to Thursday’s incident.
