My sisters won't shut up about how bad a mother they think I am

DEAR DEIDRE: I’M constantly being told that I’m a bad mother and I’m not sure how much more I can take.

It’s just been me and my two kids, aged seven and three, since my husband left last October. I’m 39.

At first we were managing, but my furlough ended last month and it’s been difficult trying to juggle it all since.

My sisters, 44 and 37, criticise me for feeding the kids fish fingers three times a week, or sending them to school in dirty jumpers.

I’m struggling to muster the motivation to get out of bed. I’ve thought about suicide to escape from it all.

DEIDRE SAYS: Being a single parent is hard work. You deserve respect and support, not criticism.

If you are feeling really low again please call the Samaritans on their 24-hour helpline (116 123). And book an appointment with your doctor to explain how you are feeling.

Your sisters may think they are helping but their comments are obviously hurting you.

Please talk to them about how they can help rather than hinder you. I’m sending you my support pack, Standing Up For Yourself.

It would also help you to contact gingerbread.org.uk (0808 802 0925), who support single parents.
