My family don't understand why I won't leave my beloved dog behind
DEAR DEIDRE: RECENTLY, my boyfriend and I split up and I was planning to move closer to my family.
I am a 32-year-old single mum with a six-year-old son. But it looks like I won’t be able to take my dog with me and I can’t face leaving him behind.

The plan was to move in with my mum while I sort out my own place.
My sister had agreed to have the dog in the meantime, but her landlord won’t allow animals in his flat.
I have had my pet for eight years and my son has grown up with him.
The thought of getting rid of our lovely labrador devastates me.
I have done nothing but cry for hours but my family is unsympathetic and can’t see what the issue is.
DEIDRE SAYS: The family clearly don’t understand the bond that you share with your dog.
He is more than just a pet, he is a member of your family.
They might reconsider if you stress to them how important he is to you.
The Dogs Trust runs a great advice site that helps people find pet-friendly accommodation (letswithpets.org.uk).
Good luck – and I do hope you manage to keep your dog with you.
