Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, so when Melania Trump wore a Barbie pink minidress for a 2011 Mar-a-Lago photo shoot, fashion designer Vicky Tiel recognized it for what it was.
“I dressed Ivana [Trump] in my traditional Vicky look for 20 years and when Melania married Donald she copied one of my dresses,” Tiel told The Post at an intimate dinner at Washington, DC, power spot Café Milano to promote her new book “The Absolute Woman: It’s All About Feminine Power.”
“How often is it that the two wives are wearing the same identical dress?” Tiel mused.
She added, “Ivana is a friend of mine for many years, but Melania obviously wanted to please him, so she copied the dresses — she wore Ivana’s look.”
Ivana had the Tiel-designed dress in several shades of pink and sported them in the late 1980s when she and Trump were still married.
Tiel said of Melania’s fashion sense — including that controversial Zara jacket with the words “I really don’t care, do u?” scrawled on the back — “I think that she’s a very nervy woman, she’s got a lot of chutzpah … I wouldn’t be surprised if [for] the next two years of his thing, I think she may do more shocking things.”
Tiel, a DC native who was close friends with actress Elizabeth Taylor, has created dresses for pivotal movie moments, including Julia Roberts’ frock in the opera scene of “Pretty Woman.”
