Lots of Britons want to shop sustainably and supermarkets have been trying to make this possible. Tesco has shared the latest ways it is trying to become greener.
Fruit and vegetables
The retailer has shared an update on how popular fresh items are grown.
Starting this month, Tesco has been provided with the first commercial volumes of vertically-grown strawberries.
This method of growing crops requires 50 percent less water and reduces the carbon footprint per kilo of fruit by 90 percent.
This method could be used to grow other popular fruit and vegetables in the future, continuing to cut its carbon footprint.
Tesco fruit technical manager Sabina Wyant commented: “Vertical crop production is a giant step for fresh produce growers in helping reduce their carbon footprint and use less water, at the same time boosting their yields.
“For shoppers there is also a clear benefit, with consistent quality fruit and availability for up to nine months of the year, regardless of the weather conditions.”
Growing fruit in a more sustainable way is not the only change the retailer has made.
Tesco has recently introduced new recycling points for soft plastics.
These have been rolled out in branches across England and Wales and allow shoppers to return items that cannot be easily recycled.
After a successful trial in 10 branches, more than 171 stores now have recycling centres.
These take soft plastics such as bread bags, fruit and vegetable packaging and crisp packets.
Salad bags, baby food pouches and pet food pouches are other popular items that can be returned.
Tesco’s Director of Quality Sarah Bradbury said: “It is an absolute priority to remove and reduce as much plastic as possible and ensure everything we use is recycled and kept out of the environment.
“Where plastic serves an important purpose such as reducing food waste, these new recycling points make sure that every piece can be easily recycled.
“Trials have shown they are popular with customers, so we believe rolling them out at scale will have a real impact.”
The recent changes come as part of Tesco current Remove, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle strategy to cut down on plastic.
Tesco shoppers have commented on the changes and praise the eco-friendly initiatives.
A social media user said: “@Tesco it’s great that you’ve led the way on recycling soft plastics.”
Another added: “Great news for the push for easier ways to recycle.”
