Jon Snow has said it was “time to move on” after “three incredible decades” presenting the news for Channel 4. The 73-year-old joined the outlet after serving as ITN’s Washington correspondent and diplomatic editor in the 1980s. How much has he made from his journalism career?

In his own statement, Snow said: “I am excited by the many things I want to accomplish but I have to say I have enjoyed every minute of my time with the programme.

“It has brought me adventure, as well as sorrow in some of the stories that I have had to report and also joy in reporting others, but above all, it has brought me community in working with the most fantastic group of people who are bound in intellect, humour and understanding.

“Together, we have forged a wonderful service. I feel proud to have contributed to Channel 4 News let alone to have anchored the programme for the last 32 years. I’m looking forward to new adventures and new challenges.”

It is said that Jon will step down from Channel 4 at the end of the year.

Channel 4 News editor Ben de Pear described the journalist as a “wonderful man”.

He said: “His fearless journalism, inherent compassion, a nose for a good story as well as sympathy for the underdog have been powdered by relentless energy, charm and a mischievous sense of fun.”

What is his net worth?

According to NetWorthList, Jon Snow is worth a huge £8.7million.

Three years ago, the presenter took a pay cut due to gender equality reasons after it was revealed that female employees earned almost 30 percent less than men.

However, he is said to be one of the highest paid newsreaders in the UK with a reported salary of around £1million.

Despite having one of the most recognisable faces in the industry, other sources have said he is paid significantly less.

In his early career, the journalist travelled the world including volunteering in Uganda as a teacher when he was just 18.

Aside from his lengthy career at Channel 4, Jon also has experience in radio and television.

In 2002, he returned to presenting radio shows including his John Snow Reports slot on Oneword Radio, a weekly show and podcast.

Two years later, Jon added to his wealth by writing an autobiography called Shooting History which takes a look back at his reporting of world affairs.

The journalist has been presented with many awards throughout his career including one for his coverage of the Kegworth air disaster.

Other awards include the 1980 Award for TV Journalist of the Year for his coverage in the Middle East.

In his personal life, he was briefly engaged to fellow ITN reporter Anna Ford before splitting and marrying long-term partner Madeleine Colvin.

The couple had two daughters together before splitting.

In March 2010, the journalist married Precious Lunga, a Zimbabwe-born scientist.

The couple welcomed their first child last month after revealing they were using a surrogate.

In a statement to PA news agency, Jon said: “In our desire to seal our now eleven years of marriage with a baby, my wife suffered numerous medical setbacks and miscarriages.

“Consequently, we will always be deeply grateful to our surrogate, who carried our embryo to term.

“Amid these challenging times, we feel doubly blessed to be able to celebrate our good fortune.”
