A dishwasher can be a real domestic lifesaver, affording you precious time and keeping your hands dry and soft – but it’s not just for getting your crockery and cutlery sparkling.
In a new blog post, lifestyle experts from online electrical retailer AO.com has revealed the dishwasher hacks that will change the way you use your appliance, as well as the crucial mistakes you might be making.
It turns out the machine is also good for cleaning any other durable items you can think of that might be looking grubby, even your white trainers.
And if your cooker suddenly breaks down, it can even be used for a spot of cooking.
You can cook salmon in the dishwasher by wrapping it a tight parcel of tinfoil and switching on the machine to its highest setting
It’s definitely not the most obvious use for your dishwasher, but you can use it to cook dinner.
Wrap salmon in foil with lemon and switch the dishwasher to its highest setting, making sure the package is air tight so that water can’t get in.
As most dishwashers don’t go above 170C, you won’t have to worry about overcooking your fish again.
And if there’s a no water cycle on your machine, you can use the dishwasher to keep food warm.

CLEAN YOUR KEYBOARD
Many would cringe at the idea of putting any form of tech accessory in the dishwasher, but apparently it can work. Use a rinse cycle, but take the keyboard out of the machine before the dry cycle begins.
You will then need to leave it for a few days to dry out.
Although most keyboards are safe to put in the dishwasher, most manufacturers do no recommend it, so it’s probably best to stick to doing it with older models
If there’s a grubby old keyboard that you want to restore to its former glory, you can run it through the dishwasher
Trainers can go through the dishwasher to get them looking box fresh again.
Make sure you take the laces out and use baking soda in the machine instead of a dishwasher tablet.
If you need to freshen up a grubby pair of trainers, try running them through the dishwasher with baking soda
Cleaning children’s toys can be a hassle, but it is possible to put them in your dishwasher, just like your plates.
Try placing smaller items in a colander or lingerie bag to stop them falling between the racks.
It is recommended to wash them on the lowest temperature, and not to put toys with synthetic hair – like dolls – in the wash, as it may melt.

If living in an area with hard water, it is vital to use rise aid to prevent leaving a residue on plates, cutlery and glasses.
DON’T WASH THESE ITEMS
