Brighten up your boudoir for Valentine's Day

Brighten up your boudoir for Valentine’s Day – fashion editor DINAH VAN TULLEKEN gives a re-fresh course in lingerie

When did you last think about your lingerie? I mean really considered it, as you would when deciding what to wear over it.

If you’ve grown used to tired but serviceable undies, tighten your bra straps — because it’s time to ring the changes.

Undergarments have been flashed all over the catwalks this year, in vibrant hues that are the latest in mood-boosting dopamine dressing.

Delicate lace triangle bras in a pretty wisteria colour were seen through sequinned dresses at Bottega Veneta, and satin pants could be seen peeking over the top of pleated skirts at Miu Miu.

Plunge bra, £22, and briefs, £13, jdwilliams.

Meanwhile, at Dior, broderie anglaise bras were teamed with full skirts. And who could forget Valentino creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli sending his hot pink bra down the runway with nothing else but an A-line skirt and opera gloves.

I know what you’re thinking when I say ‘visible underwear’ — but you’re wrong: this is a surprisingly easy trend to follow.

A subtle glimpse of bra strap in a contrasting neon colour is all you need for impact. And you can wear bold, bright smalls even if you have no intention of displaying them to the world. I’m just saying, it’s time to start thinking of your undies as accessories — like earrings and sunglasses.

For that to work, your underwear has to be stand-out, unlike that fadedto-grey T-shirt bra.

Half cup bra, £70, and briefs, £35,

A potential replacement is the emerald lace triangle bra, top right, £75 from Livy. Or if you need more underpinning, try Freya’s lemon, lace side-support bra, top left, which still looks delicate (but is available in D-K cup sizes).

JD Williams’ wired lace offering comes in a bright red for only £22. Or my personal High Street favourite, Marks & Spencer, has a whole host of Crayola colours to choose from.

Of course, Valentine’s Day is close — but this isn’t about dressing to please your partner. It’s about pleasing yourself, with fun, colourful yet comfortable designs.

Laura Charles, M&S lingerie director, says: ‘We’ve seen strong demand for bright pinks, reds and vibrant blues.’

Even if you’re the only one who ever sees your undies, wearing something bold and bright in secret will give your mood and confidence a quiet boost.
