So we compared similar meals (a pie dish, veg side, chocolatey pud and bottle of red wine) offered on deals at Tesco, Morrisons and Asda — and an alternative from M&S — to see where savings can be made . . .
TESCO: Deal is valid on various Finest range products and includes a main, a side, a dessert and a bottle of wine or soft drink for £10. Tesco Finest chicken leek and bacon filo pie, £6, creamed spinach, £2.60, eight Swiss chocolate profiteroles, £3, and a bottle of Route Tempranillo £7, would add up to £18.60 if you were to buy it all separately.
MORRISONS: The Best range’s deal follows the same format of a main, side, dessert and drink for £10. You could get salmon, smoked haddock & king prawn fish pie, £5.50, green vegetable medley, £2.50, 2 Belgian choc melt-in-middle puddings, £2.46, and a bottle of Nerello Mascalese, £7.50, worth in total £17.96.
ASDA: Its Extra Special range offers a similar £10 deal, too. You could get cottage pie with red-wine ragu, £6, green vegetable medley, £2.50, Belgian chocolate millionaire’s desserts, £2.50 and Bibesia Varietal Shiraz, £5. When bought on their own it would all work out at £16.
M&S: If you’re not picky about your grub being part of the old-format deal, you can still score a purse-friendly “fakeaway” from M&S. The store’s Taste Meal Deal, £10, serves two and includes two mains and two sides from Chinese, Indian or Malaysian options, saving £3.50, depending on which dishes you choose.
