7 best body SPF sunscreens of 2022 to protect the whole family – tried and tested

With this week set to be another scorcher, there’s one beauty essential you shouldn’t be without: a good sun cream. The best body sunscreens shouldn’t just protect your skin from the sun but should also feel nice to apply, meaning you’ll be more likely to top up every two hours as recommended.

Our panel of Beauty Edit testers have been busy trying out a batch of new sun protection products, from a smart SPF that promises to boost your tan as it protects to a bargain £2 cream that feels like something much more expensive. Here are the ones that REALLY impressed us and our testers…

Best sunscreens for the body to buy in 2022

Best sunscreen for a featherlight feel

Hawaiian Tropic Silk Hydration Protective Weightless Oil SPF30, £7 here

Beauty Edit tester Beth says: “It has a nice scent without being overpowering – I could still wear it with my perfume without worrying about the scents clashing. I'm really bad at wearing sun cream because I hate the feel of most of them, but this was so light I didn't notice it. I was very impressed that this sunk into the skin in moments without leaving any oily residue. Extra bonus of no streaks or shininess! I'm delighted to find a product I'm happy to use.” 5/5

Best luxury sunscreen

Lancaster Sun Beauty Nude Skin Sensation SPF50, £31 here

Beauty Edit tester Lesley says: “I love the luxurious feel this gives to my skin. It leaves a nice sheen and dries quickly so it's not sticky. The smell reminds me of beach days. I wore it on a hot day here, and was in and out of the sun all day. I felt like I was protected and didn't experience any burning. Great brand, great product. I loved this!” 5/5

Best sunscreen for tan fans

Ultrasun Tan Activator Sculpt SPF30, £45.99 at QVC here

Beauty Edit tester Boo says: “I know this is bad but I do love getting a tan on my body (I keep my face out of the sun at least). So I was excited to try this cream as it promises to activate melanin production. I absolutely loved it. I wore this in the garden during a heatwave and I definitely tanned more quickly without burning, and it felt gorgeous on my skin. It’s not sticky at all, just very moisturising.” 5/5

Best bargain sunscreen

Aldi Lacura Sun Moisturising SPF30, £2.39 here

Beauty Edit tester Michaela says: “This is a really good, no-nonsense cream. Even though it’s cheap, you can’t tell. It rubs into the skin easily and doesn’t leave a greasy feeling or chalky streaks, so it’s good for both adults and children. It also smells like holidays. What more could you want?” 5/5

Best fragrance-free sunscreen

Bali Body Face & Body Sunscreen Spray SPF 50+, £23.95 here

Beauty Edit tester Ruth says: “Behaves and smells like a skincare product, rather than sun protection, which is a plus. It really doesn’t feel like an SPF50, it feels very light and I like the lack of fragrance. It doesn’t irritate my skin, leaves a subtle reflective sheen, and seems very moisturising. The only downside is the mist is rather free-ranging.” 4/5

Best sunscreen for a fresh feel

Naked Sundays SPF50+ Glow Body Mist, £21.60 here

Beauty Edit tester Helen says: “Lovely scent and a perfect sunscreen! It applies wonderfully, with a lovely cooling feeling. The absolute opposite to the chalky white, sticky sunscreens of the past. This product smells fresh, it is not sticky and has great protection. Sunscreen is so important, and having one you look forward to applying makes a big difference.” 5/5

Best sunscreen for fun factor

SVR Sun Secure Fizzy Milk Lait Crepitant SPF50+, £16.50 here

Beauty director Lynne says: “My kids (aged 12 and 13) try to dodge wearing sun cream and are too old to be swayed by anything as ‘babyish’ as coloured stripes of SPF. This one, though, literally crackles when it’s sprayed onto the skin – something I’ve not seen before and which got an unprompted ‘oh, cool!’ from both kids, as well as repeat application requests. Long may the novelty last. PS: I love wearing it too!” 5/5
