1. We tested: Alebear Cycling Shorts

  • (AD) Alebear Cycling Shorts, £16.49 from Amazon – buy here

Classic, comfy and really practical: Alebear Cycling Shorts tick so many boxes as sportswear and streetwear.

Featuring subtle slip pockets for your necessities, these quick-drying, antibacterial and odour-reducing shorts are made for working up a sweat.

However, as soon as we put these on, we were swayed to wear them outside the gym too because they're so flattering.

As a size 12 we opted for medium and the sculpting fit really pulled us in, with the thick waist-band rising high to just below our ribs.

The quality fabric's smoothing but not uncomfortably tight, it just makes you feel secure throughout your workout.

Our favourite part was being able to slip our phone and AirPod case into the seamless pockets. These are such a steal for under £17.

2. We tested: Crazy Girls Womens Cycling Over-Knee Shorts

  • Crazy Girls Womens Cycling Over-Knee Shorts, £6.99 from Amazon – buy here

Crazy Girls' Womens Cycling Over-Knee Shorts qualify for Prime Next-Day so you can grab them just as the sun comes out in the UK (we know it's unreliable).

Sporting this season's favourite animal print, these Brown Leopard shorts are cut from stretch-jersey which is perfect for everyday wear.

Ok so, here's our take: are these good for working out? No. Are they ridiculously comfy? Oh yes.

Although the fabric feels a bit cheap, these are the comfiest out of our list as the waist band is so stretchy and they're so lightweight.

They're a lighter print than the picture makes out but if you're after a pair for chilling at home or slipping on under a baggy tee, these are perfect.

We've just found our new staple summer loungewear.

3. We tested: Pour Moi Energy Seamless Cycling Short

  • Energy Seamless Cycling Short, £18 from Pour Moi – buy here

Whether you're into yoga or running, the Energy Seamless Cycling Short by Pour Moi is made for both low and impact exercise.

Available in black, they're seamless, high-rise and feature a subtle logo on one leg.

First off, we were impressed with the high quality of these. As they're thick and so sculpting, they feel much more expensive than the £18 price tag.

The high-waist flatters your figure, securely ensuring that you feel really supported as you work out.

We'd even go as far as to class these as shape-wear, that's how great we feel in them.

If you're looking for cycling shorts to pair with a crop-top without feeling too exposed then don't sleep on these.

They've got holes down the side that are giving us Maddy in Euphoria vibes, and they come in orange or black.

Maybe keep these for dressing up at night, we're not sure how well they'd go down for the London to Brighton bike ride.

11. Best staple cycling shorts: Cotton Jersey Slim Fit Shorts

  • Cotton Jersey Slim Fit Shorts, £19 from Cos – buy here

COS' Cotton Jersey Slim Fit Shorts are the staple every woman deserves to have this spring/summer.

Priced at just £19, these cotton-stretch, knee-length shorts are elasticated for comfortable everyday wear.

Whether you're pairing them with an oversized blazer, or a baggy tee for your yoga session, there's not much these won't go with.

What to wear with cycling shorts

The internet is brimming with style inspiration, especially from the likes of Princess Diana who loved rocking them with a crewneck sweatshirt.

Today, everyone loves to style them with bra tops and oversized shirts or relaxed tailoring. It just depends on the occasion.

If you're keeping it casual then an oversized tee works wonders.

Do you wear underwear with cycling shorts?

Here's a secret: most cyclists are going commando. Padded cycling shorts don't actually require underwear as they're made to be skin-friendly.

In terms of general cycling shorts, it's the same rule as leggings:

If you want to wear knickers then it's a bit more hygienic but if you're working out then just make sure that they're cotton or synthetic.

How to wash cycling shorts

The label of your cycling shorts will tell you whether they're tumble-dry friendly or not.

As cycling shorts are already tight, you need to make sure that you put them on the correct temperature to ensure that they don't shrink.

What to look for in cycling shorts for women

Besides street-style ready designs, if you're shopping for actual biking shorts then you should always make sure the padding is correct for you.

We recommend that you make sure that the seat-padding sits discreetly and doesn't protrude out of your crotch.

These are the three things you should look for: comfort, support and a snug fit.

Where to buy women's cycling shorts

Now that cycling shorts are cemented on the street style scene, basically every shop you encounter stocks a pair, from Asda to Selfridges.

If you're buying cycling shorts to work out then definitely make sure you're shopping sportswear (it's usually clarified by breathable, synthetic fabric).
