Steam from showers, heat from baths and radiators and even less sunlight can be tricky specifications to fulfil. But the right bathroom plant can create a relaxing, tranquil space and even have provide air-purifying qualities.
Bathroom specialists, Drench.co.uk, conducted a study to discovered the most popular plants people have in their bathrooms.
Polly Shearer, bathroom interiors expert at Drench.co.uk said “more people are creating nature-inspired bathrooms” which is why plants that can survive in those specific conditions have become more popular.
She added: “Google search interest for ‘bathroom plants’ as of October 2021 has increased 1253 percent over the last decade, which truly shows the increase in popularity for plants.”
The most popular bathroom plant is a philodendron, according to Drench.co.uk’s data.
The site looked at average monthly Google searches, the percentage increase in search interest over the last decade as well as sales data from the UK’s leading online garden centre, Primrose.
Philodendron houseplants come in many forms but the two main types are vining and non-climbing.
Some common varieties are Philodendron Scandens, Philodendron Imperial Green, Philodendron White Wave, Philodendron Cobra and Philodendron prince of orange.

Evie Lane, Gardening Expert at Primrose spoke exclusively with Drench about why philodendrons are perfect for bathrooms.
She said: “Humidity is one of the hardest conditions to replicate for jungle-loving plants, provided you don’t want to keep a humidifier running all year round.
“Philodendron plants are one of the best plants to feature in your bathroom, due to their ability to provide a big impact with only a little care needed.
“As philodendrons were originally grown in tropical regions of the Americans and West Indies, a humid and filtered-light location like your bathroom is best for getting the most out of your plant.

“The heart-leaved variety of philodendron, The Philodendron Scandens, is virtually indestructible thanks to its high durability.
“When happy and healthy, they can grow six to ten feet and are a marvellous hanging plant for a bathroom.”
Bathroom plants need to be able to cope with extremes of temperature and air quality.
The rooms can become warm and humid when in use but can be cooler when they’re not used or at night.
You will need to check that the plant you choose is not toxic to pets.
Polly also said if you’re not one for keeping plants alive then you should choose plants that thrive on neglect.
She recommended going for snake plants, aloe vera, and cast iron plants.
She added: “These plants can handle a little bit of neglect and will thrive on little water, so if you can’t remember the last time you watered your plants, these are the perfect options!”
