World Chocolate Day gives us an excuse to indulge in some of our favourite chocolate treats. Whether it be cake, brownies, cookies or tarts, chocolate is versatile and can be used for a variety of different baked goods. So read on for some of the best chocolate recipes to bake for World Chocolate Day.
Chocolate brownies are a classic sweet treat, beloved by adults and children alike.
BBC Good Food has shared their recipe for “easy gooey brownies” which take 20 minutes to prep and 30 minutes to cook (plus cooling).
For this brownie recipe, you will need:
- 150g butter
- 75g light soft brown sugar
- 150g plain chocolate, broken into pieces
- 1 tbsp golden syrup
- 3 eggs
- 125g golden caster sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 150g plain flour
- ½ tsp baking powder
- 3 tbsp cocoa powder, plus more to dust
- 4-6 tbsp dulce de leche, caramel or chocolate hazelnut spread
The first step is to heat the oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4 and line a 20cm square cake tin with baking parchment.
On a low heat, melt the butter, brown sugar, chocolate and golden syrup together then remove the pan from the heat when the mixture is smooth.
For step two, whisk the eggs and caster sugar together in a large bowl.
A light and fluffy consistency is the desired effect and according to BBC Good Food, the task is “worth doing properly” for best results and can take a few minutes.
After this, add the vanilla extract before sifting over the flour, baking powder and cocoa powder.
Add the chocolate mixture and fold everything together quickly, before scooping half of the mixture into the tin.
For the next step, BBC Good Food explains: “Dot over scoops of caramel or chocolate hazelnut spread and then scoop the rest of the brownie mixture over the top.
“Add more scoops of caramel or chocolate spread, if you like, and bake for 30 mins.
“The top of the mixture should now be set and slightly cracked looking, but the mixture underneath will still have a slight wobble.”
After the brownies have been removed from the oven, step three is to ensure the brownies cool completely before cutting them up.
A bit of cocoa or icing sugar can make a nice addition when dusted on top of the finished baked goods.
For a super speedy and fruity chocolate dessert, Sainsbury’s has a great recipe for chocolate-dipped strawberries on its website.
All you need for this recipe is 12 strawberries and 75g of dark chocolate, broken into small pieces.
Add the broken dark chocolate into a heatproof bowl over a small pan of simmering water, but make sure the bowl doesn’t touch the water during this step.
Heat the chocolate for three minutes until it has melted, giving it an occasional stir.
Line a sheet with greaseproof paper and dip the bottom half of the strawberries in the chocolate.
Put the strawberries on the sheet and let the melted chocolate firm up.

No-bake chocolate cheesecake
If you’re looking for all the deliciousness of a baked dessert without the actual baking, look no further.
For this BBC Good Food recipe, you will need:
- 130g butter, melted, plus extra for the tin
- 300g chocolate digestive biscuits
- 150g milk chocolate
- 150g dark chocolate
- 250g mascarpone
- 300g cream cheese (don’t use a low-fat variety)
- 50g icing sugar
- 25g malted milk drink powder (we used Horlicks)
- 25g hot chocolate powder
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 300ml double cream
- 150g Maltesers (100g chopped, 50g whole), plus a handful to decorate
- 100g chocolate buttons, roughly chopped
For the first step, butter and line a 23cm springform cake tin and put the biscuits in a food processor until the biscuits are fine crumbs.
Give the crumbs another blitz after adding the butter, then press the mixture into the tin with a spoon.
Put the tin in the fridge and start on step two, which is making the filling.
Melt the milk and dark chocolate in separate bowls over pans of water on a gentle simmer or in the microwave, stirring every 30 seconds until the chocolate is melted and then let it cool.
For step three, BBC Good Food explains: “Use a hand whisk to mix the mascarpone, cream cheese, icing sugar, malted milk drink powder, hot chocolate powder and vanilla extract until smooth. In a separate bowl, whisk the cream, then fold into the mascarpone mixture.
“Add half the mixture to each of the chocolate bowls, stirring until well combined. Stir half the chopped Maltesers, whole Maltesers and buttons into the milk chocolate mixture; stir the rest into the dark chocolate mixture.”
Then all that’s left to do is spoon the dark chocolate mixture onto the biscuit base, then adding the milk chocolate mix on top.
Let the cake chill in the fridge overnight and decorate with Maltesers afterwards before serving.
