It’s safe to say that Salt Bae’s new London restaurant has made headlines recently for all the wrong reasons.
Firstly, people were shocked by the sky-high prices at his new Knightsbridge site – with steaks coming in at a few hundred pounds each.
Then, the restauranter was back in the spotlight after people accused the venue of ‘deleting’ bad online reviews.
If you still want a taste of the action, but aren’t willing to break the bank, fear not. A Londoner has revealed how you can recreate Salt Bae’s £1,500 gold-coated steak at home – for just £65.
TikTok and YouTube star Harrison Webb has essentially done the hard work for us, by researching how to achieve some of his signature dishes – at a fraction of the price.
To start, Harrison purchases butter for £2, thyme for 70p and garlic for 60p, before heading to the butcher and picking up a 1.4kg cote de boeuf (which is a tomahawk steak with the rib trimmed down) for £32.92.
Two packs of gold leaf also cost him £28 in total.
How much the Salt Bae GOLD steak REALLY costs to make! 😳💰#saltbae #Nusr_et
Once all the ingredients are ready, Harrison explains the straightforward method for the steak.
‘Salt it. Sear it. Baste it. Then finish off in the oven. Let it rest while you cover in it gold,’ he says in the clip.
The home-cooked meal comes to just £64.22 in total – making it £1,385.78 cheaper than the Nusr-Et version.
And TikTok users have been quick to have their say on the considerable price difference.
One person replied: ‘Basically people paying an extra £1,400 just for Salt Bae to put salt on their steaks trickling down his arm.’
Another added: ‘That salt costing £1,400.’
While someone joked: ‘Don’t forget the £100,000 service fee.’
Although, others have pointed out that Salt Bae likes to use wagyu beef, which typically costs more than regular beef.
But it seems this isn’t really an excuse either – as Aldi has been known to sell wagyu steaks in the past for less than £10.
