Cranberry sauce is the perfect addition to any Sunday dinner, complimenting meats like turkey. Typically the sauce – made of crushed cranberries among other ingredients – is used during Thanksgiving dinners and Christmas dinners worldwide.

With Thanksgiving coming up this week, some may be researching recipes for the ultimate seasonal treat.

Cranberry sauce – or cranberry jam as it is sometimes known – can be found in most good supermarkets for those wanting a quick and easy solution.

However, making your own will take around 15 minutes and only takes three ingredients.

There are differences in flavour of cranberry sauce depending on the where the sauce is made.

For example across Europe, it is slightly sour-tasting, while in North America it is typically more heavily sweetened.

There are also jellied and non-jellied variants, with the version without jelly acting as more of a sauce.

For those not having turkey, cranberry sauce also goes well with pork, chicken and ham.

And the ultimate treat after a big meal is the next day having the leftover meat in a sandwich with cranberry sauce and stuffing.

Ingredients

  • 100g light muscovado sugar
  • 100ml orange juice, fresh or from a carton
  • 250g pack fresh or frozen cranberries

Method

Tip 100g light muscovado sugar and 100ml orange juice into a pan, then bring to the boil.

Stir in 250g fresh or frozen cranberries, then simmer until tender but still holding their shape.

This will take about five minutes if using frozen cranberries or eight to 10 minutes if using fresh.

The sauce will thicken as it cools, and will keep in the fridge for one week.

On the day, bring to room temperature before serving.

You can also try a few extra ingredients to give your sauce an extra kick.

One is to add blanched strips of orange zest for a Cumberland sauce-style twist.

You can also add some spice with ginger or chilli.

Adding cinnamon, clove and cardamom could give the ultimate Christmassy kick if you so wished!

For a richer flavour, add a splash of port or red wine.

And if you want a bit of texture, try adding sliced almonds!
