With Coronation day fast approaching, many of us will be planning what to cook or bake for street parties or celebrations we might be hosting.
From afternoon tea to a classic English trifle, there are plenty of easy recipes to try but why not give themed cupcakes a go?
The Queen of Cakes, Mary Berry has an easy vanilla cupcake recipe and hobbycraft has shared its British-theme cupcake designs so that all the family can get involved and enjoy eating them together afterwards.
Mary’s recipe makes 12 cupcakes
175g butter (room temperature), cut into large pieces
175g self-raising flour
175g caster sugar
Half a tsp baking powder
Three large eggs
Half a tsp vanilla extract
Paper cupcake cases – gold or silver are regal for the Coronation-theme
For the buttercream:
175 g butter (room temperature), cut into large pieces
Half a tsp vanilla extract
Two to three tbsp milk
350g icing sugar, sifted
1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/fan 160°C/350°F/gas mark four. Line a 12-hole muffin tin with paper cupcakes or muffin cases.
2. Put all the cake ingredients into a large bowl and beat with an electric hand whisk or a wooden spoon until smooth and evenly mixed. Divide the mixture evenly between the paper cases.
3. Bake for 20–25 minutes, or until the cakes are well-risen and firm on top. Transfer to a wire rack to cool.
4. Make the icing: put the butter, vanilla extract, two tablespoons of the milk, and half the icing sugar in a large bowl and beat until smooth. Beat in the remaining icing sugar, and pour in the rest of the milk if needed to make the icing the right consistency.
5. Smooth the icing over the cooled cupcakes and then decorate. To decorate, there are three designs to choose from: union flag, bunting, or sprinkles.

Union flag cupcakes
You will need: Ready to roll icing in red, white and blue
1. Roll out white fondant icing to approximately 3mm thick and cut out one circle for each cupcake using an 8cm round cutter.
2. Place the icing circle on top of the buttercream and smooth. Repeat until all cupcakes are covered.
3. To make the flag, roll out red icing and using a pizza wheel, cut strips 1cm wide. Use these strips to form a cross on each cupcake, attaching it in position with a little water.
4. Take blue ready-to-roll icing and cut a large rectangle, then divide it into triangles. Make sure to leave a gap for the thin red stripes.
5. To complete the design, add red stripes measuring 4-5mm wide.
You will need: Ready to roll icing in red, white and blue, and an edible food pen in red and blue.
1. Roll out the blue and red icing and cut into bunting triangles.
2. Roll out the white icing and cut it into triangles and draw on union flags with the edible food pen.
3. Stick the flags onto the white dome icing.
You will need: Buttercream icing and red and blue sprinkles
1. Instead of smoothing the icing over the cupcakes, pipe it on using a piping bag and nozzle.
2. Sprinkle with red and blue sugar crystals.
