Karen Hauer, 38, tied the knot with Kevin Clifton, 38, after the couple met while working on Burn The Floor in 2015. The Strictly Come Dancing professionals tied the knot that same year, but called it quits just three years later.
The Venezuelan-born dancer has since opened up about the breakdown of her relationship with Kevin, insisting she didn’t want it to come to an end in a new interview.
Appearing on The Divorce Club podcast, Karen addressed the pair’s marriage and admitted it took her a year to “actually let him go”.
Karen told the host: “Obviously, other things happen, there are other factors that happened, that really hurt us both.
“But I thought… I would have never let go of it. I wouldn’t have never, never let go of it.”
She added: “I would have liked to have fought for it. It took me a year after we separated to actually let go of him.”
Karen credits what happened with Kevin, who is now in a relationship with Stacey Dooley, for helping her learn who she is.
The Strictly star explained: “It took me a long time to cut the umbilical cord that I had connected to him.
“Because it was connected for such a long time and at a completely different level than my first marriage, because this marriage was what I was always looking for.”
Karen continued: “But it was a huge learning curve, I learned a lot of huge lessons for me.
“Because of that breakup and what I had to go through emotionally, physically work wise, in the press and in the public eye. It made me stronger, and it made me realise what I really need to work on, and that was me.”
Karen was previously married to fellow former dance partner Matthew Hauer in 2009 and reverted to using his surname after divorcing Kevin.
She has since called time on her most recent romance with former boyfriend David Webb.

The professional dancer also addressed the struggles she faced while working on Strictly following her separation from Kevin.
“I had to work with him for two, three years after we got separated and it was hard, because you can see how much love you have for one another, and the respect,” Karen remarked.
The BBC favourite claimed that she felt if the former couple took “some time for ourselves”, their marriage may have worked.
Karen added: “Under different circumstances or better understanding of ourselves, of what we actually needed, and to actually just sit down and have some time for ourselves, I think that it would have worked.”
Addressing the cause of their breakup, the Strictly performer admitted there was a lot of “pressure” from outside forces.
Karen confessed that their relationship soon spiralled, adding “things turned nasty overnight”.
Despite the couple’s divorce and subsequent relationships, Karen admitted she still has “love” for all of her exes.
