Comedian Jason Manford, 40, rowed with football fans last night after some disputed the referee’s decision to award England a penalty when Raheem Sterling went down under the challenge of Denmark players Mathias Jensen and Joakim Maehle in the first period of extra-time. Following the penalty, which pundits Gary Neville and Roy Keane branded “soft”, England went on to win 2-1 and will play Italy in the Euro 2020 final at Wembley on Sunday.
Jason sparked criticism from some Twitter users when he declared Sterling was the “player of the tournament so far” after he won the penalty, which was scored by Harry Kane.
The Manchester City star also scored England’s equaliser, following an assist from Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka.
Despite his achievements in the match, Jason’s praise for Sterling caused one fan to question: “Yeah but he’s a cheat?”
The comedian was quick to fire back at the Twitter user in view of his 379,000 followers, writing: “Is he balls! He was being choked down all night.
