Emmerdale cast: ‘It gets messy’ Kim Tate star Claire King addresses secret 11-year romance

Claire King – best known as Kim Tate in Emmerdale – said “it gets messy” when relationships take place in the public eye, something she has resolved not to do. The actress has been dating a “normal bloke from Yorkshire” for the past 11 years, although his identity remains unknown. The 57-year-old, who has been a regular part of the ITV soap since 1989, said he had “no interest” in the showbiz world. She went on to discuss if marriage was on the cards for the pair, following her split from her first husband, actor Peter Amory, in 2004.

My partner has nothing to do with the showbiz industry and he has absolutely no interest in being part of it

Speaking to OK! Magazine, Claire discussed her very private romance and why it is important to her.

She started: “I know what it’s like to have a relationship that’s played out in public. It gets messy and I didn’t want that again.

“My partner has nothing to do with the showbiz industry and he has absolutely no interest in being part of it.”

Claire wed Peter, now 54, in 1994, who played her stepson Chris Tate in the long-running drama.

She was later engaged to fellow actor John Robson following two years of dating, but that also came to an end.

The star continued: “It’s nice to keep my relationship separate to work, it creates a bubble for me, which I really appreciate.

“He’s just a lovely normal bloke from Yorkshire. He keeps me grounded even though I like to think I’ve always been quite down to earth.”

When asked if she was going to walk down the aisle with her beau, she said: “I don’t think so.

“We both went through divorces and know how hard that can be.”

She also quipped: “The only time I can see us getting married is if we discover some really great tax advantages.”

Meanwhile, it comes just hours after Claire hinted at who Jamie Tate’s (played by Alexander Lincoln) love interest will be.

Her alter ego last saw her offspring 20 years ago when he was just a toddler, however he will be returning to the village.

She told DigitalSpy: “Belle [Dingle, portrayed by Eden Taylor-Draper] has got a little interest in him.

“Jamie realises Kim is still pulling the strings. She thinks she can win him around and get him back in the fold, living at Home Farm, and does everything in her means to do it.

“Kim’s way is not the way Jamie wants it done, so it’s an ongoing battle.”
