The Chase star Anne Hegerty, 62, has revealed that lockdown saved her from being on the verge of a “breakdown” last year. The quizzer opened up on having “sobbing fits” in her car as she felt overwhelmed by work, but was able to recover when the country went into lockdown because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The mastermind, who’s known as The Governess, welcomed a change of pace, as her demanding schedule meant she kept getting ill.

She has now said: “By the time lockdown came in, I was so burnt out, I’d had something like three colds in the space of five months because I was rushing around from place to place and suddenly having sobbing fits in the car.”

The TV personality said that in hindsight she now realises that she came close to having a breakdown, because of her hectic lifestyle.

Anne added: “There was just so much on my plate, there were so many things I was planning on.

“I look now at my diary for the beginning of last year and I think, ‘Well, you kind of were about to have a breakdown.'”

After looking after herself during lockdown and enjoying the time spent on her own, the mastermind is now ready to get back to work.

Next week Anne will fly to Australia to film episodes of The Chase Australia for eight weeks.

Last year The Chase star’s comments about how much she was enjoying lockdown caused controversy.

Speaking on This Morning with Phillip Schofield, the ITV host revealed that she relished not having to leave her home, apart from to get food.

She told the breakfast show presenter: “I have loved lockdown. I don’t want it to end, except we’d like to get back in the studio.

“I’m really liking not having to go out. I’m only going shopping once every 10 days or so. It’s been brilliant.”

The Governess went on to reveal that she had been using the time alone to catch up on life admin.

She continued: “I’ve been doing a lot of online quizzes and Zoom quizzes and that’s been very helpful, and I’ve been reading a lot.

“I’ve just been catching up on stuff that has needed to be done for a long time, like paperwork and cleaning and things like that.”

Anne recently opened up on The Chase co-star Paul Sinha’s health after he was forced to pull out of spin-off Beat The Chasers on doctor’s orders.

Ahead of the show being aired, Paul told fans he couldn’t make filming due to being ill at the time.

Anne gave an update about her co-star’s health and confirmed his future on the show.

She said: “He wasn’t very well, he is a lot better now and he is looking forward to getting back to work.

“But, we always intended to film with all six chasers and when one of us suddenly couldn’t, they rebuilt the set and repositioned some of the lights.

“It’s a pity, but he will be back in the future,” she added.
