Contrary to what some people may think, books are still extremely popular. Many feel like there’s nothing better than strolling about a bookstore for several hours on end before paying for many books selected during their trip. But to assume that all bookstores are alike would be a massive mistake. There’s one bookstore in particular that arguably outdoes them all.
As revealed in National Geographic, the bookstore that seemingly trumps all of them is the Ateneo Grand Splendid Bookstore. Located in the Recoleta neighborhood of Buenos Aires, Argentina, this place is often referred to as, “the world’s most beautiful bookstore.” The place was originally a theatre when it was founded back in 1919, but its massive size and gorgeous interior made it a great place to open a shop back in the 2000s.
When you step inside the Ateneo Grand Splendid Bookstore, you’ll immediately notice the gentle lighting that hits all the bookshelves that line the walls. These bookshelves are stuffed with more books, CDs, and DVDs then you’ll know what to do with. The fact that this place was built back in the early 1900s clearly shows, due in large part to the old-fashioned, yet lovely, architecture. There’s also a café at the back of the location where many customers will read while sipping on fancy coffees.
There are plenty of cool features within the Ateneo Grand Splendid Bookstore. There’s a kid’s section that also carries plenty of books written in Spanish. For those who can’t read the language, your selection of English-written books is rather limited. But there is a section of them full of large format photo books, romances, and thrillers. That doesn’t mean you can’t visit this bookstore just to get a picture; the staff never mind. You can get a photo either in one of the many balconies or from the raised café that will surely get loads of attention on Instagram.
Given the fact that Argentina is famous for being a literary country — over tens of thousands of books are said to be published here per year- this bookstore fits right into this South America country. If you’re thinking of visiting, it’s said that June is the quietest month for this place. Going during the week is also a good idea, as that’s when most people are either in school or at work. No matter when you go, one thing is for sure; any who loves books needs to visit the Ateneo Grand Splendid bookstore before they die.
