Ryanair passengers are claiming that an issue on the airline’s app has left them facing the airline’s £115 fee to change names on a booking.
A handful of passengers booking for groups have said that when they made the booking, the surnames of the other members of their party were changed to be that of the lead passenger, rendering them incorrect.
Considering Ryanair charges £115 each way to change the name on a ticket, that makes for a hefty extra price tag – and in most cases the name change costs more than the actual flights.
According to MoneySavingExpert, those affected had booked flights for the same group before, so details were saved to their Ryanair account – and while the details appeared correct when they selected names from a dropdown menu, once the booking was complete the names appeared incorrect.
It is worth noting that Ryanair offers a grace period of 24 hours after the initial booking where passengers can correct minor booking errors for free.
After that, it costs £115 to change it online – and if you leave it within 24 hours of the flight and need to do it at the airport, it will cost you £160.
A spokesperson from Ryanair told Mirror Online: "We were unable to replicate this apparent issue, but we can confirm there is no “glitch” with our booking system.
"We offer a 24 hour grace from the time of original booking to correct any minor errors (i.e. spelling of names, incorrect routings/dates). Fees will be applied to changes made outside of the 24 hour grace period.
"The name change fee is a preventative measure to discourage and prevent unauthorised online travel agents from ‘screenscraping’ Ryanair’s cheapest fares and reselling them on to unwitting consumers at hugely inflated costs. Full details can be found on our website here."
Unsurprisingly, it’s still left some passengers livid, and they’ve taken to social media to vent their frustration.
One user wrote: "A word of warning to my fellow travellers. When you book a Ryanair flight and select one of your saved passengers from your profile, Ryanair changes that person’s surname to yours. You’re then expected to pay a £115 name change fee, and they refuse to help at all. I’m livid."
Another one warned: "When you book RyanAir flight for someone in your Ryanair profile, RyanAir substitutes this person’s last name to yours. The ticket becomes unusable unless you pay 115€ name change fee, often more than ticket price. Wonder how many people lost their money because of this error!"
