Natasha Lyonne Reveals Inspiration Behind Her Show ‘Russian Doll’

One to watch! Natasha Lyonne dished all the details about her new Netflix show, Russian Doll Opens a New Window. .

Lyonne, 39, plays a woman named Nadia in the hit comedy-drama series, who finds herself caught in an eerie loop as she attends an elite New York City party. Although she dies at the end of the soirée, she wakes up the next morning unharmed and relives the same mysterious series of events.

“A lifetime of dying and returning again and again ultimately led to this feeling, like, an apropos theme,” the Emmy nominee told Us Weekly exclusively at the show’s recent premiere party. “And Nadia is a character that I named for Nadia Comăneci, my favorite gymnast from the ‘80s.”

The Orange Is the New Black star linked up Opens a New Window. with Amy Poehler to create the sinister series. “Amy and I came up with this idea together, about choose your own adventure in life, in which no matter how many options were on the table, still, deep down, you might wake up feeling wanting, unless you took a deep dive and really discovered what was missing,” Lyonne explained to Us. “Thematically, it’s something that even though that’s no longer my lifestyle today and hasn’t been for over a decade, sort of remains in big and small ways, the way in which we all feel like we live and die each day.”

But these days, Lyonne leads a tamer lifestyle than her character. The American Pie actress and her boyfriend, Fred Armisen, opt for low-key date nights. 

“Fred and I do like to go on dates. Usually, I’m doing the crossword puzzle when he convinces me it’s time to leave the house,” she quipped. “I never want to leave the house till I’m out there and then I never want to go home. I’m a child. We usually go to obscure but delicious sushi places that are ideally totally empty and it’s a real break time.”

Russian Doll is streaming on Netflix now.
