The M1 motorway is shut southbound between junction 28 and 27 in Derbyshire after a serious crash.
A woman has been rushed to hospital with serious injuries after the accident between a lorry and two cars at around 3.30am.
The road is expected to be closed over rush hour between Junction 28 for Mansfield and 29 for Felley.
Notts Police tweeted: "Serious collision on M1.
"Expect delays in morning rush hour Officers were called following a collision between a lorry and two cars on the M1 southbound, between J28-27."
The woman has been taken to Queen’s Medical Centre with fire and rescue and police still on the scene.
Highways England posted on Twitter at 6.20am that the motorway is likely to be shut until after 8am.
It wrote: "Police investigation is ongoing, we have been advised it is likely to be at least 2 hours before we will be able to open any lanes at all past the scene."
A diversion is in place with traffic coming off at Junction 28 and joining the A38, the A610 to rejoin the M1 at Junction 26.

Yesterday a serious crash involving four HGVs forced the motorway to close northbound between junctions 20 and 21.
A man was taken to hospital with "life-threatening" injuries.
