As Ben Stiller‘s daughter gears up for college, he couldn’t help but crack a joke about the admissions scandal that’s rocked the lives of celebrity and socialite parents.
“It’s great, she’s going to go to Yale on a full football scholarship and she’s going to major in Photoshop,” Stiller joked on “The Ellen Show,” referencing the part of the bribery scandal that involved students having their heads edited onto athletes’ bodies so they could be admitted as recruits — without actually having the sports credentials.
The actor, 53, who was in town to take his daughter Ella to Southern California schools, acknowledged that although looking at colleges can be stressful, getting there needs to be done in an honest way.
“There’s crazy pressure that the kids go through and the parents go through, but obviously you’ve got to draw the line,” he said.
Ella, who was in the studio audience, said that she wants to follow in the footsteps of her father, mom Christine Taylor and paternal grandparents, Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara, and get into acting, which Ben said he’s on board for.
“She loves it and she’s very passionate about it and she knows what she wants to do. I knew when I was 10 or 11 years old that I wanted to direct movies and eventually act, too,” he said. “It’s a crazy business as you know so I just want to kind of support her in any way possible, legally.”
Actress Lori Loughlin was taken into custody last week, after she and her husband allegedly paid $500,000 in bribes to get their two daughters into USC as crew recruits (even though they’d never rowed). She’s facing mail fraud charges and was released on $1 million bond. In the wake of the scandal, her younger daughter, YouTube star Olivia Jade Giannulli, has lost her partnerships with TRESemmé and Sephora.
